Hello and welcome to the website of Dr. Maria P. Kirchner. I am a licensed Clinical Psychologist with one office in Hunterdon and one in Somerset County, New Jersey. Here you will find information about me and my practices. Click on the links above to find out more about what I have to offer.
I am committed to provide excellent assessment and treatment for people who have experienced psychological distress and as a result feel out of balance. Interventions I use are evidenced-based and highly individualized to the person’s personal needs. My goal is to help people gain emotional, intellectual, and spiritual equilibrium, utilizing personal strengths and going beyond perceived limits so they can return to living a meaningful, fulfilling, and rewarding life.
You can contact me directly at 908-240-6934 or call the office at 908-757-4921 and speak with the business manager, Ann Eelman. She can answer any administrative questions and help with insurance issues and can also schedule an appointment for you. Just indicate which office location you prefer, Watchung in Somerset County, or Stockton in Hunterdon County.
"The lights within you, the dungeon too
I know what to do, and what not to do.
I won't open the rusty door,
I'll show you how you locked it, nothing more." - Frank Rubenfeld.
A Zen roshi or master, carrying a flailing stick in his hand, approaches one of his students with the following problem. “Observe what I am holding in my hand,” begins the master. “If you tell me it is a stick I will strike you with it. If you tell me it is not a stick I will strike you with it. If you fail to respond promptly with an answer, I will strike you with it. Now I ask you, what is this that I am holding in my hand?”
The solution is not to respond verbally but rather to seize the flailing stick from the master. The story illustrates the method of koan. A koan is a statement or question which seems to, and often does, defy all the laws of logic, the solution of which requires an unusual response or fresh way of viewing the world and responding to challenges.
